Breaking Records: Meet the Golden Retriever Who Lived Beyond Expectations and Turned 20

For those unaware, Augie isn’t your typical Golden Retriever. She’s defied odds by living nearly double the average lifespan of her kind. Astonishingly, Augie marked her 20th birthday last April, a milestone that has recently garnered attention.

Adopted by Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt from Tennessee when she was 14, her life’s longevity was unpredictable, as medium-sized dogs at that age usually equate to about 78 human years. By that count, Augie was already seasoned in age when she settled with her final family.

Steve Hetterscheidt recalled how they initially fostered her, terming it a “permanent foster”, assuming no one would be keen on adopting a dog considerably older than its typical lifespan.

Yet, even after a couple of years, Augie displayed a zest for life, maintaining her health and vitality. This convinced the couple to formally adopt her. Eventually, Jennifer Hetterscheidt retired from her position at the rescue center, and the pair moved to Tennessee, where they presently live. Fast forward to today, and the incredible canine recently celebrated her 20th birthday, mostly in fine fettle with just a few minor health concerns.

Usually, Golden Retrievers have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. However, Augie has defied this norm. Initially taken in by the Goldheart Golden Retrievers Rescue in Tennessee, she’s lived almost double the standard years allotted to a Golden Retriever. The rescue center proudly shared this heartwarming news on their digital platforms.

In celebration of her milestone, the team uploaded adorable photos of Augie, highlighting her remarkable age. They attributed her extended life to a combination of her genetic makeup and the dedicated care she receives from Jennifer, especially her proactive rapport with Augie’s vet.
