At the 2023 Governors Ball Music Festival held at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York City, on a recent Friday, Lizzo delighted audiences with an exhilarating show.
Even with the rather challenging air conditions in New York City, arising from the smoke of numerous Canadian wildfires, Lizzo finished her set, showcasing her commitment and passion for her craft. The smoky conditions have been plaguing the entire American Northeast.
The festival saw a star-studded lineup that included big names like Kendrick Lamar and Odesza, and also featured artists such as Ice Spice, Diplo, Lil Nas X, Haim, Rina Sawayama, Pusha T, Snail Mail, Lil Uzi Vert, Giveon, Lil Baby, PinkPantheress, Black Midi, and Syd, among others.
The accomplished artist, 35, known for her hit ‘About Damn Time,’ made a statement with a bold pink wig and a shiny silver jumpsuit, complete with a high leg slit. Matching her vibe, her four backup dancers adorned themselves in similar pink wigs and silver costumes.
In anticipation of the Governors Ball, a three-day outdoor music event, organizers worked alongside meteorological experts to keep a close eye on the air quality.
City officials have been regularly liaising with the city to ensure the safety of all festival-goers, as smoke from over 400 Canadian wildfires drifts south. The Mayor, Eric Adams, indicated that the city’s air quality is among the world’s poorest, advising residents to remain indoors due to the ‘extremely poor’ air conditions.
Lizzo’s performance occurred amidst her Special Tour, which was launched last September, promoting her latest album, Special. The album, which made it to the second spot on the US Billboard 200 chart, was released in July the previous year and met with favorable reviews.
The tour saw an auspicious start with a sold-out concert at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida. During her tour, Lizzo was accompanied by artists such as Latto, Saucy Santana, and Bree Runway, and the tour also included several European dates in February and March. Her engaging performances have won her immense appreciation from her fan base, evident from the comments on her Instagram account, where she has a following of over 13 million.
Notably, Lizzo invited drag queens to join her on stage during her April show in Knoxville, Tennessee, in a move seen as a protest against the state’s public drag performance policies.
However, the tour hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Lizzo had to cancel her Montreal concert due to flu-like symptoms, and a subsequent performance in Hartford, Connecticut, due to a strep throat diagnosis. The artist reassured her fans with a video message and rescheduled the concerts for June 11 and 13.
The tour is set to wrap up with a grand finale at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan on July 30.
