On Father’s Day, the legendary pop icon Madonna utilized her Instagram platform to honor her father, Silvio, now aged 92.
Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone and now 64 years old, posted a fresh selfie along with a vintage photograph of her dad on the platform on Sunday afternoon. The upload comes shortly after she unveiled a new video providing fans a glimpse into her upcoming 84-city world tour.
“Here’s to celebrating all Dads out there!!! Regardless of how they identify — he, she, they, or them,” Madonna initiated her tribute. She continued, “But above all, a toast to my father, Silvio. He once remarked he’d keep going until the wheels fall off, and I’ve taken it to heart.”
She expressed her gratitude for his unwavering work ethic and love, noting his refusal to spoil her. “You instilled in me the spirit of survival! Eternally thankful, but also genuinely exhausted,” she concluded humorously.
The much-anticipated tour is due to kick off on July 15, 2023, in Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, Canada, and wraps up on January 30, 2024, at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, Mexico.
This announcement closely follows her recent milestone as the first female artist since Cher to open a single on the Billboard Hot 100 in five distinct decades. The only other artists to achieve this feat in five or more decades have been male solo acts like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Jackson, or all-male bands like the Rolling Stones and Santana.
Her new single “Popular” was released on June 2 amidst a flurry of debate surrounding “The Idol,” which has faced criticism since its Cannes premiere in May. The series has faced scrutiny particularly for its risqué portrayal of Lily-Rose’s character.
In the second episode, the character Jocelyn engages in self-pleasure and self-harm in the midst of grieving her mother, falling eventually under the erotic spell of The Weekend’s character, Tedros. Following “Popular,” Madonna dropped a single with Sam Smith titled “Vulgar,” which contains provocative lyrics that assert her iconic status: ‘Boy, get down on your knees ’cause I am Madonna.’
Throughout the song, the Queen of Pop also threatens to ‘split’ the ‘banana’ of anyone who dares to ‘cross Sam tonight.’
